Marbled paper

No machines, no presses, no mass production, just water, paint, a brush and, above all, skilled hands. The ancient art of marbled paper has been practiced for over a thousand years in discreet workshops. It is a tactile and visual craft in which one learns to make colors dance on water before freezing the result on a durable medium that can be customized to suit individual tastes.

A craft born in the East and reinvented in Normandy

Marbled paper, or ebrü in Turkish, is an art dating back to 10th-century Persia. Gradually spreading to Turkey, India and then Europe, it found a new lease of life in the 19th century in Normandy. In workshops in Rouen and Caen, self-taught artisans or those trained by Turkish masters adapted Eastern techniques to local tastes: floral motifs, arabesques, soft colors.

They also expanded the uses of this paper, which had historically been used to:
  • Bind precious books such as those kept in royal and monastic libraries.
  • Create binding backgrounds for manuscripts and art books.
  • Decorating maps (the “marbling” helped to hide creases and tears).
  • Covering envelopes, particularly for official and diplomatic correspondence.
  • Adorning furniture in luxury cabinetmaking workshops.

This precious expertise was often passed down from generation to generation and developed over time in several regions of France, its three main components being water with the perfect texture, natural pigments, and... infinite patience. This is a skill that is acquired mainly through practice, as there are no formal training courses available in France.
For those who still wish to learn this poetic art form, courses and demonstrations are available, such as:

At the end, in addition to a very likely desire to do it again, you can leave with your creation in the form of a poster or sheets that can be used as cards, bookmarks, or customized notebooks. A beautiful souvenir of this fun and artistic experience.

Create your own marbled paper

If you're already a pro at arts and crafts, you can also try your hand at this timeless art on your own.

To do so, you will need to:
  • Prepare the water with gum arabic to make it viscous.
  • Place colored pigments on the surface.
  • Create patterns with brushes, needles, or sticks.
  • Place a sheet of paper on the water and then, in a moment of magic, lift it up to reveal your creation.

Like the Persians did over 1,000 years ago, you will see that marbled paper is much more than just paper; it is a journey into the art of gesture and color. A discreet luxury that can be experienced, touched, created, and shared.

Enjoy your discovery.
