Traditional Alsatian costume

Although the traditional costume is no longer really worn nowadays, it remains a symbol of Alsace recognizable throughout France. Inspired by the rigour of dress inherited from German fashions and French aesthetics, it is still proudly worn today at regional events or weddings.

A suit or suits

To say that there is only one traditional Alsatian dress is a mistake. Originally, each village had its own style and specific headdresses.

However, only one typical costume remains today in popular culture.

With the aim of creating a regional identity, Alsatian folk groups have now adopted a common uniform.

The traditional outfit

Women's clothing consists mainly of a white blouse and a black apron worn over a coloured skirt. This skirt is different according to the religion of the wearer.

A Catholic Alsatian woman will wear the "Kutt", a long red skirt while a Protestant Alsatian woman will wear the "rock", shorter and of green, blue, red or purple colour according to the liturgical calendar.

The male costume is simpler: a red waistcoat over a white shirt with a black pant is the most important element. Note: the number of gold buttons embroidered on the costume indicates the level of wealth of the wearer.

The atypical headdress

The large knot cap is also one of the key pieces of the Alsatian dress. As for the dress, details differ according to religions. Protestants wear a black knot whose sides stop at shoulder height, while for Catholics, the sides of the headdress go down to the waist. Unmarried girls wear bows with fancy ribbons. To the delight of visitors, several Alsatian towns regularly allow these costumes to be admired at village festivals or folk dance shows.

Has this beautiful costume given you ideas for a themed evening, and are you feeling as daring and adventurous as Elisabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga? Opt for a woman's pirate costume and transform yourself into Keira Knightley for an evening. Jack Sparrow apprentices will also find plenty to amuse the gallery on this site dedicated to former sea bandits.

And if, while reading this article, you noticed that some of the items in your wardrobe could be transformed into an Alsatian costume, you can learn the art of upcycling in this workshop open to all.
