Thierry Mugler

A versatile artist, Thierry Mugler was known as a stylist, perfume designer and director. Worldwide, he was one of the most famous signatures of French fashion.

An eclectic artist

Born in Strasbourg in 1948, the young Mugler was to show an aptitude for artistic fields at an early age. Very curious and versatile, he was introduced to the performing arts by joining the ballet of the Rhine Opera and, after dance, he discovered directing and costume design for the theatre. However, it is towards drawing that he will decide to direct his studies. He thus enrolled at the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg to become an interior designer.

An extravagant creator

After his studies, he moved to Paris and began his career as a stylist by making his own clothes, which were highly acclaimed for their original style. At the age of 26, he became an independent designer and signed his first collection which he named Café de Paris.

His collection is a tribute to an ultra-feminine, sexy, sophisticated and modern silhouette, where we find some of the stylistic codes of the Hollywood stars of the 50s. An eccentric designer, he dressed famous artists such as David Bowie, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

Nicknamed the "creator of shock", he conceived everything up to the staging and the very elaborate choreographies of his fashion shows, an exercise that he was to revolutionize by turning them into real sound and visual shows.

After Haute Couture

In the early 2000s, Thierry Mugler began creating famous perfumes, such as Angel and its famous star-shaped bottle.

He then returned to the art of the stage and the show by making many costumes for dancers of musicals or for the Cirque du Soleil. A passion that will lead him to launch himself in the creation of shows as an artistic director. Always a jack-of-all-trades, he also launched his interior design studio: Le Studio.

A life and a work well filled that seemed, before his death on January 23, 2022, to have still beautiful chapters before them.
