More than 900 years old, the castle has survived rivalries between lords, kings and emperors as well as many centuries of conflict between Germany and France.
Built in the 12th century by the Hohenstaufen family, the castle changed owners several times.
From an impregnable fortress in the Middle Ages (thanks to its strategic position) to a stronghold of brigands, the history of this building is rich in twists and turns. Deliberately burnt down in 1633, then abandoned for 2 centuries, it was restored in the 19th century.
Today, the castle is an essential place of tourism in Alsace.
A good day is necessary to enjoy the castle and discover its surroundings.
The surrounding houses, furnished in medieval style, can also be visited. The hostel, the mill and the forge, which have been completely restored, immerse you in the atmosphere of the time and, inside, you can wander through different rooms, admire the murals and the collections of weapons.
Having become a film set, notably for Jean Renoir's film "La Grande Illusion", the castle offers visits retracing the rich history of the citadel to adults, children and people with reduced mobility. To go further, don't hesitate to extend your discovery of the region and its natural heritage with the Monkey Mountain just a few kilometres away.
Set off to conquer this treasure of Alsace without further delay.
