The Château of Fontainebleau

A royal and imperial residence, the Château de Fontainebleau has seen eight centuries of sovereignty reside here, that is to say 34 kings. Among them was François 1er, on his return from exile in Spain. He made his palace, he designed it in a Renaissance style, and affirmed his power against the adversary. It's his many restorations which makes the castle what it is today.

An important place in the history of France

One of the best known rooms is the gallery connecting his bedroom to the chapel of the Trinitarian convent. Painted by Italian artists, the frescoes evoke mythology and testify François 1er's interest in theirs arts.

An emblematic feature of the chateau is the staircase in the form of a horseshoe, it was built on request of Louis XIII between 1632 and 1634. The staircase is divided in two and parallel and consists of 46 steps. It is one of the references of the castle so often imitated in Europe.

You should come and visit this true home of kings and, if you are more in a country mood, to discover the majestic forest of Fontainebleau located 1/4 hour from the castle. See also: the pretty town of Melun.
