The Sancerre

Produced in the vineyard of Sancerre, the wine of the same name is one of the most appreciated in the world. Available in red, rosé or white, these grape varieties from the Centre-Val de Loire region are classified as AOC and have long accompanied French gastronomy. Let's take a look at this emblematic wine production to impress your guests during your next meal.

A territory predestined for viticulture

  • The creation of the Sancerre vineyard dates back to Antiquity but its development dates more precisely from the 13th century.
  • Today, it is spread over 14 communes and 2,800 hectares of hills that are naturally made for vine growing because they are perfectly oriented, exposed and protected.
  • In the Middle Ages, the wines of this department of Cher were on the tables of many royal courts and the Duke of Berry (1340-1416) even declared that they were the best of the Kingdom.
  • During the Renaissance, their success led them to be exported to Northern Europe where they were particularly appreciated in Flanders, England and Scotland.
  • Since 1959, the Sancerre appellation includes red and rosé wines made from the Pinot Noir grape.
  • Speaking of appellation, the origin of its name is ambiguous: Christianization of Saint Caesar into "Saint-Cere" or tribute to an African martyr and derived from the name Saint Satyre? Linguists have not yet decided.

A festival of flavors and colors

With its white clay and limestone soils, the Sancerre vineyards give birth to a variety of wines that delight the senses: the eyes will be seduced by the pale gold hues of the white Sancerre, the ruby hues of its red version and, for the rosé, by a variation of the Pinot Noir that is slightly grey in color.
The flavors of this range of 3 wines include peach, orange blossom, morello cherry, quince, blackcurrant, apple, grapefruit and lemon or, depending on the terroir, mint, fern, acacia, honey and spices.

According to these different aromatic notes, Sancerre wines can be matched with many dishes. For example, fine and fresh white Sancerre wines can be served with a Crottin de Chavignol, fish or hot starters. For white meats, the light and round side of the red Sancerre is perfect, and it is recommended to accompany poultry in sauce by the tender and subtle pink Sancerre.

Good tasting (in moderation of course)!
