The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

"Draw me a sheep...". Even if you haven't read it (yet), you will certainly recognize this excerpt from The Little Prince. Written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and released on April 6, 1946, the most famous French book in the world is the second most published book after the Bible.

Much more than a tale for children

Under the guise of a children's story, this poetic and philosophical work (and discreet "autobiography" of its author?) has sold more than 145 million copies worldwide, including 12 million in France alone, and has been translated into some 280 languages and dialects. But more than this impressive publishing success, The Little Prince is a true cultural phenomenon!

Millions of tapes, DVDs and audio CDs have been sold, a museum has been dedicated to the story in Japan, and in the United States and Germany it has been the subject of an opera and, in France and Korea, of a musical. In some countries (Morocco, Canada, Lebanon...) this beautiful invitation to rediscover the child in oneself is even integrated in school programs and there are already 5 films, 4 cartoons and 300 books paying tribute to it.

Did you know that?

Beyond these numbers that make your head spin, here are a few anecdotes about this inescapable literary work:

  • Initially planned as a Christmas story, its creation would have been spurred on by Eugene Reynal (the author's American publisher) who, after seeing him draw his little character over and over again, suggested putting him in a story.
  • The first edition was not published in France... but in the United States! Following a demobilization, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was exiled there. So the French discovered it 3 years after the Americans.
  • The character of The Little Prince was inspired by the son of the Canadian philosopher, theologian and teacher Charles de Koninck. But Thomas De Koninck has always refuted the comparison, claiming that the Little Prince is the author himself.

And you, have you read this short and endearing tale? It is never too late, because its magic works at any age. It is even recommended to reread it at different times, as its perception and moral evolve according to the reader's maturity. Have a good read!
