The old town of Vannes

Capital of Morbihan, now a city of Art and History, the old town of Vannes is an ideal place for walkers and lovers of medieval architecture. Enclosed within its ramparts and grouped around the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, it is today a pedestrian area that houses a remarkable historic district. By immersing the visitor in the most beautiful hours of this Breton city, the district holds many surprises.

Stroll in the old town

Founded as early as the Roman conquest of Gaul, Vannes did not really develop until the 14th century, when it was chosen by Duke John IV to be the capital of the Duchy of Brittany. Sheltered by its ramparts and around its developed port activity, it flourished with strength and nobility. Today, as in the past, you enter the old town through the Porte Saint-Vincent.

Around the Place des Lices, you can immediately see what best characterizes the city of Vannes: the half-timbered houses, famous testimonies of the wealth and power of the inhabitants of the time.

One of them is particularly famous, it welcomes the most prominent couple of the city: Vannes and his wife, a 16th century granite sculpture representing a couple of bon vivants. Situated at the crossroads of Bienheureux-Pierre-René-Rogue and Noé streets, the old house is now very well known to tourists.

Through the narrow streets and discoveries, our path then leads us to the Porte de la Prison which opens onto the Promenade Garenne, a walk along the 13th century ramparts. Towers and gates then follow one another above splendid French gardens.

Then, it is impossible not to visit the Place Saint-Pierre and its emblematic cathedral. Built from the 12th century, it presents an incredible diversity of styles and dominates a square where it is particularly pleasant to stroll.

At number 15, don't miss La Cohue, a fine arts museum located on the site of the former 13th century market halls.

And around it?

Around Vannes, nature is generous and allows for beautiful walks in the Gulf of Morbihan. We can only advise you the "rando des rives de Vannes", a circuit of almost 10 kilometres which starts in the town and continues on a coastal path leading to the Conleau Peninsula.

Ideal for city dwellers as well as for those who love maritime landscapes, this circuit is perfect for getting to know Brittany, a region where sea and city live in perfect harmony.

Today, the rich heritage of Vannes is the pride of the city's inhabitants. A superb place to stroll for visitors who are curious and eager for historical anecdotes, Vannes offers an exceptional living and visiting environment. It has its own very interesting scenery to discover.
