Founded as early as the Roman conquest of Gaul, Vannes did not really develop until the 14th century, when it was chosen by Duke John IV to be the capital of the Duchy of Brittany. Sheltered by its ramparts and around its developed port activity, it flourished with strength and nobility. Today, as in the past, you enter the old town through the Porte Saint-Vincent.
Around the Place des Lices, you can immediately see what best characterizes the city of Vannes: the half-timbered houses, famous testimonies of the wealth and power of the inhabitants of the time.
One of them is particularly famous, it welcomes the most prominent couple of the city: Vannes and his wife, a 16th century granite sculpture representing a couple of bon vivants. Situated at the crossroads of Bienheureux-Pierre-René-Rogue and Noé streets, the old house is now very well known to tourists.
