The village of Saint-Cado

Situated on an island linked to land by a legendary stone bridge, the village of Saint-Cado, in Morbihan, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hamlets in Brittany. A source of inspiration for painters and photographers, it delights lovers of unique and preserved natural landscapes.

The powers of Saint-Cado

A few kilometres from Lorient lies one of Brittany's hidden treasures: the ria d'Etel, a 15 kilometre long bay dotted with islands, islets and small peaks. A wetland area adored by birds and particularly suitable for the production of oysters, the ria is home to pretty ports and a few villages, including Saint-Cado, a true haven of peace linked to the land by a single stone bridge.

Legend has it that this bridge is the result of a bitter negotiation between Saint Cado and the devil. The devil finally agreed to build a bridge in exchange for the soul of the one who would cross it for the first time... Unfortunately for him, the first passer-by was a cat! The village then formed around a wonderful little Romanesque chapel built in the 12th century. Nearby, a stone construction was for a long time considered to be the "bed of Saint Cado"; people suffering from deafness would lie down there to try to regain their hearing.

The island today

Today, Saint-Cado allows us to admire magnificent and authentic stone fishermen's houses. Facing the port, the islet of Nichtarguer is famous in the world of photography and attracts artists from all over the world. With its unique construction, a house dating from 1894 which belonged to the caretaker of the oyster park, this view is particularly charming.

A paradise for birds, the ria d'Etel, of which the village of Saint-Cado is a part, is also very popular with sports enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, cycling and canoeing.

We advise you to discover the island of Saint-Cado and the whole of the ria d'Etel for the beauty of the landscape, the richness of the heritage and the authenticity of the place. And don't hesitate to stay until sunset: the last golden rays shaving the sea is simply breathtaking.

Speaking of breathtaking views, you can also spot other little corners of paradise in Southern Brittany on a microlight flight over the Golfe du Morbihan. Ready for an unforgettable first flight?
