Peugeot salt and pepper shakers

Peugeot is known throughout the world for its cars, but did you know that the manufacturer is also an essential reference in tableware? This very French domain owes it indeed the famous pepper and salt shakers present on any beautiful table.

A real success story

The Peugeot family's industrial adventure began at the beginning of the 19th century with the transformation by the 2 older brothers of the family mill, inherited from their milling ancestors, into a steel foundry. In 1812, they were awarded a 1st class gold medal for the quality of their fine steel strips and springs and, after having excelled in various fields, it was in 1840 that the PSP (Salt and pepper mills Production) division began manufacturing table accessories.
At the historical site of Sous-Cratet (Doubs), the first pepper, salt, spice and coffee grinders were created and from the beginning, success was there: the first coffee grinder, made of wood and sheet metal and available in 10 sizes, was still being produced in 450,000 copies in 1889, one year before the first car of the brand was marketed! Soberly called "ordinary model", it will then be followed by numerous creations such as, in 1874, the very first pepper mills made of porcelain, silvered metal, bakelite or wood. A timeless success, they are still manufactured today.

A recognized know-how

At the beginning of the 20th century, the products of the lion brand (its logo includes the king of the jungle as an emblem since 1850) are distributed throughout Europe and even in the United States where in 1930 the boss of Peugeot, visiting the car factories, remarked to his host that "everything here is American, except for this which is French" by taking and turning over the pepper mill placed on the banquet table.

Since then, the brand has continued to renew its range of domestic mills, offering them in different formats (smaller or larger, square or rounded), in various materials such as polished walnut or, to best match the accessory to the table, with more or less colorful patterns. Always innovative, since the 1930s Peugeot has also offered wall-mounted and electric versions of these tools that are both very practical and aesthetically pleasing.

A beautiful combination of French know-how and elegance that we hope you will continue to bring to life by purchasing these historic Made in France objects.
