The cakes of Pont-Aven

Tasty shortbread biscuits, the "galettes de Pont-Aven" have become one of the most famous specialities of Brittany. The biscuit factories of this pretty port city known to have attracted many artists in the 19th century are today real tourist attractions.

The origins of the biscuit

Pont-Aven's world-famous galettes are the pride of the town's inhabitants. Here, their manufacture is a real institution and each street corner has its specialized biscuit factory. Made from the 17th century onwards, the official recipe was developed in 1890 by Isidore Penven when he succeeded his father at the head of the family bakery. He then decided to make the manufacture of these biscuits his main activity. His wife Francine, who died in 1914, continued his work, accompanied by a certain Alexis Le Villain.

They both founded the brands Traou Mad and Isidore Penven, which were taken over by the latter's son in 1945. The wafers were a great success and allowed Pont-Aven to be labelled "Remarkable Site of Taste". For 130 years now, the various artisanal biscuit factories have been perpetuating what is now part of the region's gastronomic and culinary heritage.

Business tourism

Today, 3 workshops offer tours of their premises and free tastings to pass on to visitors the secrets of making this mysterious biscuit which today accompanies most of our hot drinks.
