The antique forum of Bavay

You probably know the arenas of Nîmes and the ancient theatre of Orange but did you know that you can also visited another major site of Roman antiquity in the North of France? The remains of one of the largest forums of the Roman Empire is waiting you in Bavay.

A Mecca of activities

Capital of the Nervians, the Belgian people of antiquity, the city of Bavay, formerly called Bagacum, was located at the crossroads of 7 major Roman roads. Because of this fortified and strategic place, the city hosted the largest forum in France at the time.

Place concentrating, in the heart of the city, the political, judicial and religious activities, the forum of Bavay was divided into 3 main parts, spread over nearly 2.5 hectares: a central esplanade, a basilica and a temple.

You will be able to admire, in addition to the remains, the impressive fortifications that protect the central square. Erected to protect the city from the barbarians, one of them, 8m high, is still in very good condition.

The Bagacum Museum

After visiting the forum, continue your tour of the site with the exhibition "Rendez-Vous 2 000 years ago". A 3D reconstruction of the Forum at the time of its splendour and an augmented reality experience will "teleport" you 17 centuries earlier, as you wander through the remains.

You will also discover the daily life of Roman citizens through the museum's permanent exhibitions and the objects on display. Toys, ornaments, objects of worship or even toiletries, so many testimonies of the past that will transport you into the intimacy of the inhabitants of Bagacum.

Thanks to a realistic decor and life-size statues, children, women, citizens and slaves come to life in front of your astonished eyes.

Finally, end your journey through time with the last history testimony that the forum offers you: an incredible collection of bronze statuettes dating from the 2nd century and rediscovered in 1969 after having mysteriously disappeared for centuries. Families, heritage lovers or art lovers, don't miss this impressive site when you are in the North of France.
To prepare your visit.
