On the corner of the Place de la Pucelle in Rouen and few steps from the touristic Place du Vieux Marché, there is one of the most prestigious buildings of the city's architectural heritage: The Bourgtheroulde Hotel.
Built by William II «Rufus», Lord of Bourgtheroulde at the very beginning of the 16th century, the building was decorated in an imposing Renaissance style to welcome eminent figures such as Cardinal Alexander of Medici.
In 1770, the Hotel endured serious damages after a fire that reduced the North Wing of the monument to ashes. The restoration of the north facade completely modified its original architecture. In 1848, the Hotel became the Comptoir d'Escompte and then the headquarters of Crédit Industriel de Normandie, the regional bank of the CIC group.
Two brothers from a wealthy family, Eugène and Auguste Dutuit, descendants of craftsmen from Rouen and passionate about art, had acquired an impressive art collection including more than 400 Rembrandt engravings, about hundred Dürer, Callot, Will, and Gelée engravings, as well as many paintings from Dutch and Flemish art schools.
In 1885, they wanted to exhibit their collection at the Bourgtheroulde Hotel. At that time, it still being the Comptoir d'Escompte de Rouen, their request was not accepted. When they died, the entire collection was donated to the city of Paris. With great regret to the city of Rouen, the collection of the Dutuit brothers is now presented at the Petit Palais in Paris.
A Five-star tourist hotel which is currently the cornestone of luxury tourism in Rouen, the Bougtheroulde hotel has 78 rooms, two restaurants and five meeting rooms.
In the South Wing, which has survived many historical destructions, you can still admire the Galerie d'Aumale, a loggia with Renaissance architecture.
In another style, but no less spectacular, you can also enjoy the reverse side of the East Wing main facade, where elements of Gothic art remain.
