The Chimonobambusa path

In the heart of the Lille metropolitan in Hellemmes, a gardener passionate about Asia created a Japanese-style garden, a change of scenery guaranteed!

An invitation to travel

Who would have thought that behind a house on Roger Salengro street in Hellemmes a beautiful green setting was hidden? Fascinated by Japanese art, the owner of the house first decorated her interior in this style, before transforming her garden that becomes an extension of this interior. The task was not easy, indeed, the garden spreads lenght-wise and only measures 370 m². The plan was a success, you really would think you were in Japan!

Martine christened her garden the path of Chimonobambusa in reference to a rare species of Japanese bamboo. From the entrance of the garden, we are submerged by a sensation of escapism and wonder. The ponds, the teck terraces, the statues and the diversity of the plants contribute in creating a zen and restful atmosphere. The garden consists of different levels and contrasts between shaded and sunny areas.

A place for contemplation!

The garden, crossed by a path, is divided by a giant bamboo curtain behind which one discovers a wilder area. At the end of the path there is a tea pavilion, indispensable in a Japanese garden, which is Martine's favourite place.

The Pavilion allows you to contemplate this beautiful little corner of nature which has more than 300 different plants. The fauna and flora are of great diversity: bamboos, Japanese maple trees, grasses, mosses...

The garden is maintained in a natural way and respectful of the environment. One of the most important achievements of this garden is the ecological pond that hosts koi carp. There is a waterfall and a lagoon area. The water is filtered by aquatic plants.

The garden is listed by the Parks and Gardens of France. It received the Bonpland Prize in 2012, a competition organized by the French National Society of Horticulture. Want a change of scenery? You can visit the garden from mid-March to mid-November. To prepare your visit and learn more about the Chimonobambusa path.
