The lighthouse of Gravelines

The Gravelines lighthouse is one of the city's many attractions. 29 metres high, it offers an impressive view of the northern coastline.

The history of the Gravelines lighthouse

The Gravelines lighthouse is located in Petit-Fort Philippe, where the Aa River joins the North Sea. The town owes its name to a fort that protected the entrance to the channel in the 17th century, Fort Saint-Philippe, named after the King of Spain, Philip II. At the time, the city was not yet French and had to defend itself against various enemies.

Built between 1837 and 1841 and commissioned in 1843, the lighthouse is recognizable by its black and white spiral painted in 1931, which earned it the nickname "Black and White" almost a century after its creation. At its foot is the house where the guards and their families lived.

The last keeper, Maurice Bienaimé, considered the lighthouse as his "corner of paradise". He lived in the house with his wife and 8 children, the family even stayed there until his death (in 2002) when he retired in 1985 and the lantern of the lighthouse died out definitively in 1979.

A landmark for fishermen

The lighthouse was used as a landmark by fishermen who travelled from the port of Gravelines to Iceland to fish for cod. At the time, radars and GPS did not yet exist on board ships, so lighthouses were essential and made it possible to sail at night.
At first, the light of the lighthouse was motionless but it was confused with the light of the houses. A light code was therefore installed that the sailors had to know in order to be able to find their way around.

Listed as a Historic Monument in 2010, the lighthouse has been open to visitors since 2005. After climbing the 116 steps to reach its summit, you can then enjoy a 360° view of Gravelines and its channel used by sailboats.

A great breath of fresh air with a breathtaking view of the immense beach of this city definitely full of surprises.
