The « Place du Vieux Marché » in Rouen is full of restaurants, including the oldest auberge of France: La Couronne restaurant, an emblem of Normandy's terroir. On the menu of this typical and convivial restaurant, traditional Normandy cuisine revisited in a refined gastronomic meal made with good fresh products full of flavour.
La Couronne restaurant was founded in 1345. For many years, it was believed that Joan of Arc had been burned on the Place de la Pucelle, just behind the Place du Vieux Marché. In 1431, the taverne-keeper Raoul Baudry claimed that he had seen, through one of the windows of La Couronne, Joan of Arc's torment. But it is not the only historical figure that the auberge welcomed. Indeed, Pierre Corneille, a famous author from Rouen, was one of their guests. It is also said that lawyer Thouret, the inventor of the French departments, was a guest there on the eve of the Revolution.
After being converted into a hotel and finally a restaurant, the auberge is now a renowned to be the Mecca of Rouen's culinary specialties. Its timbered facade dating from 1926 is not the only mark of the establishment's authenticity: Hotel Restaurant La Couronne is composed of six rooms and lounges in a distinguished and very well preserved setting.
You can taste traditional local products such as duck dishes "à la rouennaise", oysters from the English Channel or even cheese platters from the region.
La Couronne has made classicism its signature and has become an institution of French gastronomy that will truly tempt your taste buds!.
