PICTO ARTISTE Created with Sketch.

A surprise tour of street art!

Strolling along the immense Avenue d'Italie, I come face to face with a monumental mural painting. Looking-up information on the street-artist, I realized that the area is full of imposing works of urban art. So, on this warmish August afternoon, I have decided to take a walk around the district in search of other decorated buildings. Follow-me, you won't be disappointed!

Colourful street-art!

With the map downloaded on my smartphone, the first mural is that of Inti Castro. I count the floors of the building: 12... 13... 14!

Located just above the entrance of an underground car park, it's slightly hidden by the building next to it. But that doesn't stop me from admiring it, in its entirety. The artist introduces Kusillo, a carnival clown. He is dressed in colourful patchwork and is part of Bolivian culture. Indeed, Inti Castro often refers to his South American culture. The painting fills the space with bright shimmering colours.

Impressed and curious to see more, I pursue my way to find the second mural.

Not one, but three!

On Avenue de Choisy it's possible to admire three murals at the same time. Right in front of me is the largest in Europe. It measures of 66 metres high x 15 metres wide, North by Pantónio is composed of green and black sardines. The movement effect is striking, to the point of having the impression of seeing the fish coming in and out of the building, a 17th storey aquarium! Pantónio's works are often that of animals in motion, reflecting the human athmosphere of the neighbourhood.

Just a few metres away is the Héron Blueté by Stew. It took him sixty hours to finish this mural,30 litres of paint and hundreds of aerosols were used. He loves nature, collects stamps, draws inspiration from the internet and the encounters he makes... The mural measures 45 metres high and is one of the most important works of street-art. Understandably, it's impressive seen up- close!

The end of a walk

I discover the last 2 murals, first of all, a collage from the artist Ethos. In his own way, his works are often surreal with very detailed characters. His drawings are done with ballpoint pens and pencils, giving him a recognizable style. The last one. No less than seven days were needed to finish this painting. Sainer, a Polish artist, invites us into his imaginary world thanks to his murals adapted from children's stories.

Having to take the Metro at Tolbiac, I return to the Avenue d'Italie and I take the opportunity to have a quick glimpse and admire one last time, the mural of Inti Castro. On my map, another area of the 13th arrondissement also offers a tour. This time 26 street-arts are to be seen. From murals, to collage, even stencil works, of all sizes and colours are to be found. I'm already thinking of taking a walk through this neighbourhood.
