Estaminets are defined as establishments where one can eat and drink and where the Flemish identity is embodied. Authentic places, with their unique architecture and décor, they serve regional dishes such as the Potjevleesch or the Carbonnade, made with local produce, as well as regional beers. The Flemish culture is highlighted, through leisure activities such as wooden games, as well as concerts of traditional music. These taverns exude the warmth and legendary friendliness of the people of the North of France.
To obtain the label, the establishment must correspond to at least 80% of the 50 criteria imposed, divided into 4 families: products served, interior layout, the environment and the welcome. The owners of a labelled tavern become the ambassadors of the region and work with local (or very local) products, they value the typical Flanders gastronomy, they know the region to better inform customers about the activities to discover in the surrounding areas and they highlight the Flemish culture.
